A Low-Cost and High Performance Solution to Frequency Estimation for GSM/EDGE

Frequency synchronization in GSM/EDGE includes Frequency Burst (FB) detection and FB tone frequency estimation. This paper focuses on the FB frequency estimation, which is the frequency estimation from a single-tone signal. Different from conventional suboptimal solutions, the solution described in this paper is based on optimal Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation with a sequence of efficient implementation techniques. As compared with typical conventional solutions, the new frequency estimation provides about 5dB gain in different channel conditions while requiring significantly less silicon gates. The techniques presented in this paper are also generic and can be equally applied to many different applications in digital communication system designs.
